Year 1 had great fun exploring the book The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch. The children loved making their own “mustard sandwiches”, learning how to use imperative verbs and time connectives to sequence the key steps inspired by the story. They also enjoyed bringing the book to life through practical activities and discussions. We then used our hands-on experience to write our own instructions for making jam sandwiches.

 Year 1 have also enjoyed reading The Lonely Beast by Chris Judge. Over the course of the week, we have been developing our sentence structure and exploring a range of sentence types. We began by forming questions about the mysterious creature, taking on the role of journalists who wanted to learn more about it. We then wrote in the first person, in role as the Beast. We had thoughtful discussions about the Beast’s dilemma-whether he should stay in the city or return home-and used these ideas to write a letter of advice to the Beast, using a range of imperative verbs.
